I walked out Clash of the Titans, and I don’t regret it. Despite the big budget special effects, I was bored to tears by Louis Leterrier’s remake of the 1981 film. Borrowing liberally from the repository of Sword and Sandal cliches, the story trudges along, fulfilling its purpose, even though we couldn’t care less. The cast features Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, and Ralph Fiennes - all gifted actors - but their characters are no more than paper dolls here. Following the success of Avatar, newcomer Worthington has nearly become a household name. But there’s a serious disparity between James Cameron’s epic and Leterrier’s attempt at one. Avatar felt fresh and inspired. Clash feels like the filmmakers were dozing off on the job. It’s proof that your actors are only as good as the material and the direction.
